Recreating an existing artist’s exhibition within the CMU Miller Institute and heightening the experience with digital interactions. My artist of choice was Deanna Mance.
Parti-Diagram:
Embodying the overall artist’s message behind Mance’s work, the space is organized in a particular composition to encourage the interactive element after learning about her work.
Interaction
Mance’s abstract style is often composed of various smaller illustration thoughtfully coexisting with one another. Upon closer inspection, viewers may even notice a new element possibly missed priorly. The interaction allows viewers to notice these smaller details in a dynamic way that incorporates both motion and sound. Viewers can then read more about Mance and her work on the tablets within the space.
The interaction is comprised of three illuminated projections of Mance’s work that react to motions made by the viewer within a specific proximity. Movement in a particular area causes the region of that piece to react, allowing viewers to view a different perspective. The pieces illuminate different colored lights and sounds, cultivating the experience.
Process
Planning
After creating a model to scale, I planned out the interactions and a pathway to guide visitors through the gallery space before they enter the area dedicated to the immersive exhibit.
Interaction Building
Utilizing Little Bits, I experimented with a proximity sensor that would activate reactive lights and sound as visitors approach pieces within the interactive exhibit.
